Peripheral Neuropathy Information
Peripheral neuropathy is the term for damage to nerves of the peripheral nervous system, which may be caused either by:
- Hypothyroidism - An underactive thyroid fails to produce enough of the thyroid hormone.
- Diabetes - An incorrect production of, and response to insulin.
- Chemotherapy - treatment of disease by chemicals
Neuropathy may include both the loss of strength, as well as a loss of sensation, most commonly in the arms and legs. Loss of muscle mass is common, especially in the subject’s arms and legs. Often, sufferers fail to feel pain in harmful circumstances where they would normally feel pain. Symptoms depend on the type of nerves affected; motor, sensory, autonomic, and where the nerves are located in the body.
